This is the Build Your Salon podcast with me, Phil Jackson, here to help salon owners master the skills you need to build bigger profits and a fuller life. Hi everyone, Phil Jackson here again, and today I want you to take a couple of seconds to consider how are you feeling in your business at the moment? Are you feeling motivated and inspired? Are you coming up with amazing innovative ways of doing things in your salon? Or are you feeling a bit demotivated and uninspired, a bit flat? I'm somebody that's dealt with depression for a lot of years and I have to nip that kind of thing in the bud. I know that for me, personally, feeling demotivated and flat, that's the first step and I need to get off that spiral straight away, otherwise I'm going downhill really quickly. But how do we do it? Well, the first way in the salon is to reconnect with the passion, to remind yourself why it is that you're doing what you're doing, to revisit the reasons that you decided you didn't want to work for someone else, you didn't want to march to the beat of someone else's drum, that you wanted to do things your way. And the second way, and something that we invest a lot of money in in my salon, is training. The reason we spend that money is that it can yield excellent dividends for us. If I have a member of the team that's demotivated and uninspired, I know that a good quality training course will send her back to the salon with new ideas, new motivation, new ways of working. And quite often, a productivity increase of somewhere between 10 and 15%. And in fact, the way that we measure how good a quality training course we've sent them on, is how long that boost in productivity will last. But imagine you could increase your productivity, not as a technician, but as a manager, by 10 to 15%. If you could run your salon 10 to 15% more effectively. Or even better, combine that increase in productivity as a manager, with an increase in productivity from your team as well. Now that could be exponential growth for you. But we don't do it. We're really happy to invest in the technical skills that we need to run service through our salon. But we don't invest in the skills as a manager. So I want you to have a look at what you're spending. And I reckon you should be slightly uncomfortable with what you're spending on yourself.

I'd say that you need to be spending about 25% of your salon training budget on the skills that you need as a manager. Learn how to motivate your team. Learn to lead. Learn how to coach them to achieve fantastic results, not just at work, but in their lives as well. You owe it to your team. You owe it to your customers to be continually improving as a manager, continually raising standards, continually improving their customer experience. And don't you owe it to yourself to feel motivated at work? Did you set your salon up to feel flat and demotivated? Or did you envisage yourself passionate and excited and full of innovative ideas? That's not going to come without help. I'm talking to you today from California. And I'm not here on holiday, even though I've just been in the pool. I'm here for a five day conference. And these conferences cost not hundreds, thousands of pounds. Add on to that the price of the flight. This hotel for five nights. My time. Any of my coaching clients will tell you how expensive my time is. A week of my time. This is a big investment. But I do it because I need that level of motivation. I need those new ideas. I need that inspiration. We all do. So go now. Go and have a look at what you're spending on your training this year. And carve off a big chunk of it for yourself. Don't feel selfish. You owe it to your salon. And you owe it to your future. In the meantime, take care. And I'll see you next week. Hey everyone, it's Phil. Did you like the episode?
